S. Clarke
Sir Arthur C. Clarke bol britský autor science fiction, ktorý sa preslávil ako jeden z najvýznamnejších predstaviteľov hard science fiction a technického optimizmu. Jeho tvorba sa vyznačuje detailnou vedeckou presnosťou a inovatívnymi myšlienkami, ktoré často predbehli svoju dobu, čo ho robí jedinečným v oblasti literatúry aj vedy. Medzi jeho najvýznamnejšie diela patrí scenár a román 2001: Vesmírna odysea, ktorý vznikol v spolupráci s režisérom Stanley Kubrickom a stal sa ikonou sci-fi žánru. Okrem toho je známy aj románom Proti pádu noci a revolučnými článkami o geostacionárnych družiciach, ktoré zásadne ovplyvnili rozvoj satelitnej komunikácie. Clarke bol ocenený nielen literárne, ale aj vedecky – v roku 1945 prišiel s konceptom geostacionárnych satelitov, čo ho zaradilo medzi priekopníkov kozmonautiky. Bol tiež rytierom a je považovaný za člena tzv. „Veľkej trojky“ science fiction spolu s Heinleinom a Asimovom.

Arthur C. Clarke sa narodil 16. decembra 1917 v Mineheade v anglickom Norfolku, kde vyrastal v rodine anglického úradníka. Už od mladosti ho fascinovali technológie a vesmír; doma si vyrábal kryštálové rádia či rakety, čo ho formovalo ako samouka v oblasti vedy a techniky. Vzdelanie získal na Huishovom gymnáziu a neskôr pracoval ako účetný revízor na londýnskom ministerstve školstva. Svoju literárnu kariéru začal ešte pred druhou svetovou vojnou ako člen Britskej medziplanetárnej spoločnosti. Prvou významnou prácou bol jeho román Proti pádu noci, ktorý síce vydal až po vojne, no už predtým písal sci-fi poviedky a články. Počas vojny pôsobil v Kráľovskom letectve ako radarový technik, čo rozšírilo jeho technické znalosti. Po vojne sa Clarke venoval predovšetkým písaniu a vedeckej popularizácii. Spolupracoval na slávnom filme 2001: Vesmírna odysea so Stanley Kubrickom, ktorý vznikal ako unikátna konverzácia medzi filmovým umením a literatúrou. Okrem toho sa angažoval v kozmonautike a neustále prispieval do vedeckých diskusií o budúcnosti technológií. Jeho tvorba je charakteristická dôrazom na vedeckú presnosť, optimizmus voči technickému pokroku a filozofické otázky o ľudstve a vesmíre. Knihy ako 2001: Vesmírna odysea a Proti pádu noci skúmajú témy evolúcie, kontaktu s mimozemskou civilizáciou či prekonávania ľudských limitov. Arthur C. Clarke dosiahol svetovú slávu a získal množstvo ocenení v oblasti literatúry i vedy. Jeho diela boli preložené do viacerých jazykov a dodnes inšpirujú nielen čitateľov, ale aj vedcov a vynálezcov. Zomrel v roku 2008 na Srí Lanke, kde žil od polovice 20. storočia.
